In the early morning of September 10, as many as 23 Russian drones invaded Poland. NATO Allied aircraft such as Poland's F-16, Netherlands' F-35 and Italy's aerial warning and control reconnaissance aircraft were dispatched to respond urgently, shooting down about four drones, and the other drones fell after they ran out of fuel.
In the past, Russian drones and missiles had entered the airspace of Poland and other NATO member states many times during the attack on Ukraine, but until September 10, there was never a confirmed case of local defense systems shooting down Russian drones and missiles. Polish fighters have also been launched in an emergency before, but are mainly involved in surveillance of Russian drones that briefly entered Polish airspace to targets for Ukraine, rather than fighting them or shooting them down. So, this is the first time that NATO member states have attacked Russia's military assets in their airspace during the war.
Polish Prime Minister Tusk said that after the incident, consultations with allies had been conducted in accordance with Article 4 of NATO.
Russian officials first denied it, and then said that there was a problem with navigation. The Russian Ministry of Defense issued a statement saying that Moscow "has no planned attacks" on any targets in Poland.
Hungarian and Slovak leaders have suggested that Ukraine launched the drones in an attempt to pull Poland and NATO into the war.
Polish Foreign Minister Sikorsky issued a video statement on social media condemning Russia's intentional invasion of Polish airspace. And refuted Orban and Fitzón, saying: "Those who say this is a provocation of Ukraine are all propaganda for Russia. Poland, the EU and NATO will not be intimidated, and we will continue to stand with the brave Ukrainian people." He said: "It is time for the Russian leadership to understand that the attempt to rebuild the last empire in Europe is doomed to fail."
U.S. President Trump sent a brief message on the truth social platform, saying: "What's going on with Russian drones invading Polish airspace? It's started!" He did not give any more explanation for the last sentence "It's started" (here we go!). "President Trump and the White House are paying attention to reports from Poland, and as planned, President Trump will speak with President Navrodsky today."
The EU warns that Russia is trying to "test" the unity of Western allies.
Share my personal observations and impressions about this incident:
1. This is a test operation by Russia, and it has achieved its goal. 23 drones entered Polish airspace. Whether it was intentional or unintentional was not the focus. The focus was that it tested the air defense capabilities of Poland and NATO, especially the reaction of NATO;
2. Although the fighter jets of NATO countries in Poland were dispatched, they shot down $10,000 cheap drones with missiles worth millions of US dollars, which was very cost-effective. It can be seen that NATO has not yet had a specific response strategy to the new situation of drone wars in more than three years;
3. NATO's reaction to this matter seemed weak. Although European leaders issued severe condemnations and warnings, NATO had no way to fight back, and had to downgrade the first real firefight between NATO and Russia, which is of great nature, into a diplomatic incident. Let Moscow see that the other party did not initiate Article 5 of NATO, but only held consultation measures for the NATO Council in accordance with Article 4;
IV. There is no reason for NATO to do this at present. First, Russia insisted that it was not intentional, but navigation failure, and the Russian Ministry of Defense also said it would talk and consult with Poland. You know that I am eating your tofu and intend to provoke, but I do not admit it; second, there is neither formal declaration of war nor special action; third, the leader of NATO, the United States, is vague and dare not force Russia, and is also somewhat suspicious of "being in NATO and being in Russia". How could NATO be so divided?
5. On the other hand, when Europeans realize that they may be betrayed by the United States and can only rely on their own strength to fight against Russia, and are currently worried that they are not capable enough, they can only adopt two strategies: one is to increase military assistance to Ukraine, strengthen Ukraine's Patriotic War and also protect Europe's awareness of defending Europe, and the other is to gain time and increase the investment and construction of Europe's own military power. This is Macron's European military ideal. In fact, the Volunteer Alliance is building the framework of the European Army. Of course, European countries have different ideas, and pacifism has produced appeasement, which has also caused Europe's hesitation and weakness.
We will continue to follow up on the countermeasures of the NATO Council and Trump's attitude.
