The adoption of this UN resolution is closely related to the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit held in Tianjin, China less than a week ago. From August 31 to September 1, 2025, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit was held at the Meijiang Convention and Exhibition Center in Tianjin.

Security cooperation is also an important function of the SCO. The leaders of member states signed an agreement to announce the establishment of the SCO Comprehensive Center for Responding to Security Threats and Challenges, its Information Security Center, the Center for Combating Transnational Organized Crime and the Anti-Drug Center.
These institutions will significantly enhance member states' ability to deal with new threats and challenges, and more effectively maintain regional peace and tranquility.
The China-led joint border patrol mechanism has covered 90% of the border areas bordering the member states, causing the cross-border crime rate to drop by 13.7% year-on-year.

The resolution adopted by the United Nations General Assembly fully affirms the important contributions of the SCO to maintain regional peace, promote sustainable development, deepen regional cooperation and consolidate good-neighborly and friendly relations.
The resolution recommends that the Secretary-General of the United Nations maintain regular communication with the Secretary-General of the SCO through existing mechanisms, and also calls on specialized agencies of the United Nations to carry out practical cooperation with the SCO.
Amistrator Geng Shuang, the interim office of the Permanent Mission of China to the United Nations, delivered a speech after the vote, pointed out: "This result fully proves that strengthening strategic cooperation between the United Nations and the SCO is the will of the people and the general trend."
He also stated that under the guidance of the "Shanghai Spirit", the SCO has developed into the world's largest regional organization, and 27 countries including the United States voted against this resolution.
